artist biography

Joanna Wojtal-Kalinowska is a Berlin-based artist, born in 1983 in Poland, graduated in the landscape architecture (2007 / John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin) and postgraduate studies in the painting (2019 / The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow). Her artworks were presented at solo art shows in Berlin and Szczecin and at group art exhibitions: in Cracow, New York, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Salerno and Viareggio. Also a self-taught photographer. Winner of many international photo competitions (3rd place in the International Photographer of Year 2016 category - Nature: Wildlife (Amateur)), as well as the nominee for awards in the Fine Art Photography Awards competition - in the Abstract, Wildlife and Nature (Amateur) 2017-2022 category.

Joanna's work is deeply rooted in nature, which fascinates her with its unbridled strength, changeability and unpredictability. The artist, however, does not try to blindly imitate or copy her, but allows her to be guided and seduced. For her, art is a kind of the visual poetry, a metaphorical language in which she can simultaneously open and close various spaces and emotions, and her creation is an internal journey through various worlds of feelings, thoughts or premonitions, a journey to the border of reality and dreams, through unknown spaces or landscapes. Many details hidden in the tangle of lines appear again to a viewer upon closer inspection, individual contemplation of the work. It is also a kind of game with the viewer, provoking and seducing him, a labyrinth full of understatements and symbols, in which there is no single correct way out, you just need to go on the road and let yourself be guided by your own intuition to discover new perspectives, meanings and forms.
